Every year, the ESHRE certification examination is conducted at two levels: Clinical Embryologist and Senior Clinical Embryologist. Between 2008 and 2018, the overall pass rate was approximately 60% for Clinical Embryologists and 50% for Senior Clinical Embryologists, reflecting the high theoretical requirements of the certification process. Until 2023, candidates were generally required to achieve a minimum passing score of 66% (although this threshold could vary slightly between examinations). Three consecutive unsuccessful attempts result in a mandatory one-year suspension before reapplying for the examination. ESHRE certification is internationally recognized and facilitates professional mobility, providing embryologists with broader access to ART laboratories throughout the European Union.
A revised application procedure was introduced for the 2025 ESHRE Embryology examination. Since at least 2025, the examination has been organized in October, with the 2025 and 2026 sessions scheduled for 24 October 2025 and 23 October 2026, respectively
